A crane crashed onto the roof of the Williams YMCA in Mandarin on Tuesday.
The crane stretched across the roof of the building and crews worked through the night to remove the crane’s 120-foot long boom.
The massive yellow crane sat on its support struts propped up against the YMCA.
It took crews hours to weld support braces onto the boom before crews could detach it from the crane, allowing the crane to sit back on the ground.
Michelle Moore, the vice president of marketing and communications, explained why the crane was in that location before it fell on the facility.
“We were replacing two AC units and they were up there on the roof trying to replace them when it happened,” Moore said.
The YMCA told Action News Jax that W.W. GAY was working to replace the AC units.
A worker for the company said the crane tipped over because the boom extended out too far.
“People were up there using the cardio equipment when it happened,” Moore said.
The YMCA said no one was hurt and W.W. GAY said their operator was not hurt either.
Action News Jax investigated the OSHA complaints for W.W. Gay in Jacksonville and discovered that no penalties were issued after a scaffold killed two employees in 2006.
A spokesperson for the YMCA said the building sustained no major structural damage, and will reopen Wednesday at noon.
