Two dogs die of smoke inhalation after Gainesville house fire

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Two dogs died from smoke inhalation after a house fire in Gainesville Sunday.

Officials said heavy smoke was showing when they arrived at the home on NW 17th Street before 2:30 p.m.

Crews began putting water on the fire and searched for people inside the home.

Officials said the fire was caused by a hot appliance that was left on a bedroom floor next to combustibles.

They contained the fire to one room.

They are reminding people to unplug hot appliances when leaving home, and never store them next to flammable items.
