Dirty pond with dead fish again causing concern in Riverside Park

The pond is again filthy with algae, duck waste and smelly dead fish.

Cynthia Parker brings her great nephews Aided and Percy to feed the ducks twice a week at Riverside Park..

"I was telling them ‘What's different?’ and they were saying ‘It's green’,” says Parker. “I see the ducks are not as active and moving around unless they are swallowing up the bread. I think it's sad.”

Action News Jax took a picture of the dirty water to Adam Hoyles, with Onsite Environmental Consulting.

"As a scientist I would classify it as hydroeutrophic,” Hoyles said

Hydroeutrophic is the technical term for water that is highly enriched with nutrients.

Hoyles’ organization worked with the city in 2011 to remove the ducks from the pond while the dirty water was drained.

Action News Jax reached out to the city about the fish and water problems Tuesday, and we were told the dead fish were removed. But, some remained.

The city says the pond’s aerator is broken and they are working to fix it, but Hoyles says an aerator doesn't fix the problem.

"The pond needs a filter system,” Hoyles said. “Either do it onsite or through the city sewer system.”

The city says workers will be out tomorrow to get the remaining dead fish.
