ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Drivers running stop signs near a St.Augustine elementary school is putting children at risk, families said Thursday.

Jackie Kent told Action News Jax she watches cars roll through the three signs at the intersection of Orange and Sevilla Streets all the time.

“Some of them don’t even bother to hit the brakes and roll through, they just keep going,” Kent said.

According to Kent, it even happens when students from Ketterlinus Elementary School are walking home.

“Parents are tight with keeping up with their kids, but I worry about it. I worry about it,” she explained.

Her neighbor, Joe Sanderson, sent Action News Jax video he took while sitting on his front porch.

The footage shows several cars go through the intersection without coming to a complete stop, one while a family is riding bikes just feet away.

Sanderson said, “That was probably a five to 10 minute period. I mean, it’s literally constant.”

Action News Jax set up a camera at the intersection for 30 minutes, which captured video of at least a dozen cars failing to stop.

“There’s hundreds of them [kids] just walking up and down the street. I mean I’ve almost been hit a couple of times just crossing the road,” Sanderson said.

Action News Jax reporter Beth Rousseau asked the St. Augustine Police Department how many citations they’ve written for drivers ignoring the signs and whether they’d consider putting more patrols at the intersection.

When the department sends a response it will be posted in this article.

“Something ought to be done," Kent said.
