A recently fired employee of the Duval County Public Schools was arrested for armed burglary and two counts of aggravated assault, according to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office records.

JSO arrested James Coney Nov. 1.

His most recent employment with the district was as a paraprofessional and football coach at Oceanway Middle School.

District records show that Coney served as a part-time coach previously from July 2009 to April 2015, then again from Oct. 28, 2019 to June 30, 2020.

He had been reassigned Oct. 5 to Oct. 25 due to a professional standards investigation involving allegations of inappropriate physical contact with a student.

According to the district, as a new full-time employee in the paraprofessional role, Coney was working under the normal probationary status for new employees.
