JSO: Man who attempted to rob grocery store with butcher knife shot by police

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE 2/23/2020: John Robert Ritter, has now been charged with one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of burglary, according to police.

Officers say the suspect, John Robert Ritter, 39, tried to commit the robbery, would not put down the knife and ran away from police. An officer chased after him and tried to taze him but was not successful.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A man allegedly tried to rob a grocery store with a butcher knife and was shot by police at the intersection of Lem Turner Road and Trout River Boulevard Saturday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

One shot was then fired by the officer, hitting Ritter. There were no injuries to the officer, and the suspect has been transported to a local hospital in stable condition, police say.

POLICE UPDATE:

This was the third officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year.
