JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. —
A line of people wrapped around outside the Seawalk Hotel as much less fortunate was served a free Thanksgiving Meal. The event normally serves more than 100 people, but organizers said this year’s need is much greater because of the pandemic.
Beaches Rescue Recovery Mission operates out of the hotel and provides housing and resources for anyone who finds themselves homeless to help get them back on their feet.
Jimbo Stockton, a volunteer at the mission, said this year’s need is much more because of the pandemic.
“It’s been an extremely difficult year. It’s been a difficult year for people who weren’t homeless,” he said. “The people asking for help has really increased. It’s a bit overwhelming.”
He said you could help their mission by volunteering or donating.
The Recovery Mission is located at the corner of First Ave. and First Street.
“It’s kind of like the ground zero of the homeless population. And we’re about removing them from the situation and giving them a hand up,” Stockton said.
Thursday morning’s event serves as an outreach program. The organization also hosts a breakfast on Christmas and Easter. Any leftover food is flown and donated to areas in need in the Bahamas.
