JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The year 2019 closed out with 130 homicides in the city of Jacksonville and 41 arrests made in those cases.
In 2018, there were 110 homicides, according to JSO’s transparency page.
Jacksonville saw a large investment into crime fighting technologies in 2019, including a million-dollar crime gun intelligence center.
Technology like Shot Spotter have alerted police to shootings in Duval County.
While these new technologies have led to arrests and JSO intercepting weapons used in crimes, the homicide rate is still alarming.
Murder touched people from all walks of life in the community in 2019.
Just last week, Atlantic Coast High School teacher Vivian James was killed in her home in the Cedar Hills area.
In August, Jacksonville Beach father of three Jake Hall was killed outside of his home.
An Arkansas woman, Destiny Dennis, was killed at a gas station while passing through Jacksonville.
Former Raines Football star and father Ray Dukes was found shot to death at an apartment complex on Hellen Terrace Drive.
These cases that remain unsolved right now, the City of Jacksonville sits at just a 35 percent clearance rate for homicides.
