JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville on Tuesday morning.

Investigators say 61-year-old John Allen Dunaway III attacked an officer after getting into a crash.

The suspect repeatedly mentioned having a weapon, and the officer involved, Officer B. Ondriezek, attempted to use taser twice, police say.

The incident happened at J. Turner Butler and Hodges boulevards.

Police said Dunaway got into a single-car crash and the situation deteriorated when officers approached him.

The suspect was not stopped by the taser and Dunaway ran to his car, yelling he had a gun. Officer Ondriezek fired two shots, killing Dunaway.

Police and the State Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting.

Ondriezek was wearing a body camera. He has been placed on administrative leave per JSO protocol. He has been with the Sheriff’s Office for one year and this is his first officer-involved shooting.

Action News Jax could not find a criminal history or social media footprint for Dunaway.
