JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If you’re ready to clean the house before inviting your holiday guests over, now is the perfect time to get rid of recyclables like extra boxes and certain gift-wrapping items.
You have until sunset on Christmas Eve to drop them off at recycling sites around Jacksonville:

These sites will open again on Monday, December 27, at sunrise. People stopping by the Sheffield Park recycling drop-off site tell Action News Jax they are taking full advantage before the holiday rush.

“It’s important to do it. It’s the holidays,” said Sharon Menter.
“Christmas holiday is coming up so I figure we’re gonna have plenty of boxes so trying to make room,” Tim Offarrell added.
Offarrell is recycling with his two-year-old daughter Sadie.
“She likes to help out,” he shared. “So we like to bring her out, do the recycling, teach her about recycling.”
Menter is dropping off items for her family.
“I separate the plastic, and the foam and the paper,” she explained.
“My husband got his new TV for Christmas, so I’m recycling that as well and then some of the other items I’m taking to Goodwill,” she said.
If you wish to join them, here’s a breakdown of what you can recycle:
- Cardboard or paper boxes
- Plain wrapping paper and gift bag
- Holiday cards and envelopes
- These are items you cannot recycle:
- Anything with glitter
- Bubble wrap and packing foam
- Ribbons and bows
- Holiday lights
- Electronics and batteries
And starting next Tuesday, Dec. 28, St. Johns County will help you recycle your Christmas tree if you drop it off at any of these six locations:
- Ron Parker Park: 607 Old Beach Rd.
- Mills Field: 1805 Racetrack Rd.
- First Tee Site at St. Johns Golf Club: 4401 Cypress Links Blvd.
- Davis Park: 210 Davis Park Rd.
- Tillman Ridge Transfer Station: 3005 Allen Nease Rd.
- Stratton Rd. Transfer Station: 250 North Stratton Rd.
These sites will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. through Jan. 4.

“It’s just easy to put it in the car while running my errands. I just drop it off and keep going,” Menter pointed out.
“Put it all in one load and bring it out here,” Offarrell suggested.
