In 1900, railroad baron Henry Flagler wanted to give his African-American workers a place to have fun.
So, he opened Manhattan Beach on what is now Hanna Park.

It was the first Black beach in the Jim Crow-segregated South.
He rented land to Black business owners, who opened a dance hall, a restaurant, a bar and a pool room.

In the 1930s, new white landowners erased all signs of Black ownership of anything on that land.
