JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police believe a toddler shot inside of a home in the Pine Forest area Tuesday night was accidentally shot by another child, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers responded to Jernigan Road at 9:15 p.m. regarding a 21-month-old boy who was seriously hurt.

The boy was taken to Wolfson Children’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is currently listed in critical, but stable, condition, JSO said.

Police believe that the child was shot by a 5-year-old child. Investigators found that one adult was home at the time of the shooting.

According to an Action News Jax source, the children’s mother told police the gun belongs to her boyfriend, and she believed it was locked in a safe.

Investigators are still working to determine what took place inside the home that led up to the shooting. Anyone having any information surrounding this incident is asked to contact the JSO at 904-630-0500.
