Moncrief: Officer-involved shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 hurt

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE 1/7/2020: As the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office continues the active investigation into the officer-involved shooting on the evening of January 5, 2019, a photo of the gun in the possession of the suspects involved has been released by police.

More information will be released as it becomes available, JSO says.

One person is dead and another is hurt after an officer-involved shooting at the intersection of Moncrief Road and 45th Street West. The shooting happened Sunday at approximately 9 p.m.

Investigators say an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop after he noticed a car driving the wrong way on Moncrief Road.

The car ended up driving to the intersection of Moncrief Road and 45th Street West, where it hit another car, injuring two people. The driver went on to hit a pedestrian bridge within the intersection.

When the officer caught up to the car he fired several shots, killing one person and critically injuring another in the car. They have been identified as men in their early 20′s, and were transported to a nearby hospital where one died.

A rifle was located in the suspects’ vehicle, police say.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, this is the officer’s first officer-involved shooting, and he has been with the sheriff’s office for a one year and seven months.

An investigation is ongoing.
