JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Family said 17-year-old Koby Coats had dreams of going to college. Instead he was shot and killed at a home on Red Robin Drive October 3rd.

The Sheriff’s Office hasn’t announced an arrest but Action News Jax found an arrest warrant saying 20-year-old Tristan Haire is facing a second degree murder charge.

The detailed police report explained what happened the night Coats was killed.

Police said Coats and Haire were together so Coats could quote, “Be rebirth into the gang.”

Action News Jax Law and Safety expert and former FBI agent Dale Carson said a rebirth is considered a gang initiation.

“You change your name, you change your identity, you adopt yet another family that goes beyond your birth family,” Carson said.

The report said Haire and Coats were planning to fight but instead Coats was shot and killed.

The report goes on to say the “suspect confessed to killing the victim and was hiding in Atlanta, Georgia.”

Police said Haire planned to kill witnesses. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
