JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Neighbors in a Mandarin community say a nearby home is attracting rodents and creating an eyesore. They say the yard is filled with trash, abandoned furniture, and appliances.
While Action News Jax Jasmine Butler spoke with residents Friday, a woman dropped a man off at the home. She said she knew the owner and that complaints from neighbors have cost him a lot of money. Neighbors say they want action taken.
“This house is just an eyesore of the neighborhood,” Susan Philipps said.
Philipps and her husband have lived in the area for about five years. She says the property has been a problem for years.
“This has been an ongoing situation since 2023 is when it was cleaned out by the city. The first time the city was out here again in 2020 July of this year. And as you can see, he is starting all over again,” Philipps said.
Photos she shared show contractors clearing the yard in past cleanups. Today, the yard held stoves, a refrigerator, furniture, stacked wood and a bright orange van partially parked in the road.
“First time around there were slabs and slabs of granite. You could hear him at ten o’clock at night cutting granite,” Philipps said.
She says the clutter has also brought uninvited guests into their homes.
“We have been having problems with rodents because of this,” Philipps said.
Action News Jax watched someone get dropped off at the home. No one answered the door after several knocks.
According to Jacksonville’s code, garbage, trash, debris and abandoned vehicles are considered public nuisances and can result in penalties. The city says it forwarded questions about open cases or citations to code enforcement, but answers may not come until Monday.
“How many times does it take for this guy to learn his lessons? And what can the city do besides just the same thing over and over again?” Dennis Philipps said.
Those are questions Action News Jax is working to get answered.
