Family files lawsuit against Jacksonville apartment complex following 19-year-old’s shooting death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The parents of 19-year-old Patrick Hurlburt have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Marley at Trout River Apartments in Jacksonville following a fatal home invasion shooting in February. Hurlburt was shot during the daylight incident at the Northside apartment complex.

The suit, filed by The Haggard Law Firm on behalf of Hurlburt’s family, alleges that the apartment complex maintained zero security measures on the property. According to the filing, the complex operated without surveillance cameras, access control or security guards.

Records cited in the lawsuit show that the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the property nearly 1,000 times in approximately two and a half years. More than 30 of those calls involved guns or weapons and two other people were shot at the complex within that same timeframe. Hurlburt was shot on Feb. 13 during the break-in at the Northside apartment complex and died six days later from his injuries.

His family spoke publicly for the first time since his death to seek answers, hold the property owners accountable and help ensure no other family experiences a similar loss. Rhiannon McKinney, Hurlburt’s mother, remembered her son as a positive presence. “He was, he was going to make a difference in this world. He really was,” McKinney said. She described how supportive he was at home, noting, “just a good influence, you know. I would have a bad day and I’m like, God, I look horrible, you know. And you just tell me, Mom, you’re the best little mom in the world.”
