The Florida Department of Transportation hopes to have a large hole that opened up in Beach Boulevard fixed within a week.

The hole appeared near Hodges Boulevard, in the eastbound right turn lane just before Falcon Ridge Place on Wednesday around 2:15 p.m.

Ray said the hole was caused by a 4-foot drainage pipe that caved in.

FDOT Public Information Officer Hampton Ray said crews have taken steps to prevent the hole from getting bigger and endangering drivers passing by.

While Ray said FDOT is not sure yet whether Wednesday’s storms caused the pipe to cave in, he said the agency believes the heavy rainfall made the hole grow faster.

FDOT crews are making sure drainage continues until the hole can be fixed.

Ray said FDOT may have to close single lanes on Beach Boulevard as crews work to repair the hole.

Neighbors tell Action News Jax that a hole had previously formed at the same spot, but was patched up poorly.
