JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Gas prices are rising across Florida, putting more pressure on drivers as the average price of fuel reaches its highest level since May.
According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of midgrade gasoline in Florida is about $4.68, up from $4.33 a month ago and $3.60 a year ago.
Jacksonville prices remain slightly below the statewide average, but drivers are still facing increasingly expensive fill-ups.
Mark Jenkins of AAA said oil prices have risen steadily in recent weeks, putting upward pressure on fuel prices.
Diesel prices are also climbing. AAA data shows the average price for a gallon of diesel in North Florida was $3.64 at this time last year. Today, the average is about $6.33.
The increase comes as crude oil prices have topped $104 a barrel, their highest level since May.
Jenkins said rising tensions in the Middle East have contributed to higher oil prices, which can translate into higher prices at the pump.
Higher diesel costs could also affect consumers beyond the gas station. Diesel is widely used by trucks that transport groceries and other goods, and economists warn that businesses could pass those increased transportation costs on to consumers through higher prices.
For North Florida drivers, the rising cost of fuel is already changing household budgets and day-to-day spending.
