Officials are warning people about jumping sturgeon after they made their way back into the Suwannee River.

According to FWC, there are around 7,500 sturgeon in the Suwannee River and they'll be around until the fall.

Emma Powell and Jensen Butler said they saw one Thursday while they were out on the river.

Karen Parker with FWC said 44 people have been injured by the large fish since the agency started keeping track in 2006.

“They can grow up to about 8 feet and weigh 200 pounds, which is a huge fish,” Parker said.

They can be dangerous to boaters if they jump into or across your boat while out on the water.

Action News Jax covered the tragic death of a 5-year-old who was hit by one while her family was boating in 2015.

“There’s no warning signs when the fish jump," Parker said. "They can jump anywhere along the river."

FWC said officials put warning signs in the water to warn boaters to slow down in areas where sturgeon like to hang out.

Officials said rain has increased water levels, which helps decrease sturgeons' jumping activity.
