Florida’s cases drop for a second consecutive week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — On the week of August 20th, Florida’s COVID cases peaked at 151,853. In their latest report, The Florida Department of Health says the state had 100,012 new COVID cases last week. This is the lowest number of cases since July 23rd and marks the second week in a row, the case count has declined. This is also the sixth week in a row Duval County has seen a decline in cases.

While the cases went down, so did the number of vaccine doses administered. The state reports 349,845 doses were administered last week, a drop of over 168,000 when compared to the previous week. The report says 69% of Floridians have received at least one vaccine dose with the highest age group being the 65+ age group with 88% vaccinated. The lowest age group is the 20-29 year old’s with 50% vaccinated.

When comparing the data to previous report, Duval County had the biggest decline in positive cases with 1,075, followed by Clay County with 323. In terms of vaccination percentage, only Clay, Duval and Nassau County went up by 1% in comparison to the previous week’s report.
