JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A longtime friend of the man police say opened fire at Florida State University told Action News he is still in shock.

Serge Beaubrun attended Florida A&M University in 2004 and met Myron May through a relative. May was attending FSU.

Beaubrun said May was "very smart, very influential, very well mannered."

Beaubrun said May was an influence on his decision to attend law school. They last spoke a few months ago, right before Beaubrun started classes at Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville.

"It was friend talking to a friend and telling me what to expect," said Beaubrun.

He said May gave no indication anything was wrong and the conversation was mostly about what Beaubrun should expect in law school.

"He was an attorney," Beaubrun said. "He passed the bar in two different states, so he was well in the place to say those things. And he had a mind. He was very, very smart. So, to see this is very disheartening."

Beaubrun said he is now praying for the victims and grieving the loss of his friend.

"You do wish the victims well and you wish the victims prayer and you wish the victims to get through this, but at the end of the day the alleged shooter is still a friend," he said.
