Loved ones of the man who police say was shot and killed trying to stop a robber say he lived to protect others.
On Thursday, Action News Jax spoke exclusively with Douglas Cox’s girlfriend, Lisa Fighter.
“He did something that he was born to do,” Fighter said.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man wearing all black tried to rob the Dream Arcade on Edgewood Avenue North on Wednesday.
That’s when Fighter said Cox intervened.
“He threw himself in front of (the gunfire),” Fighter said. “That was the kind of person he was.”

Fighter said Cox was a devout Christian who constantly built people up. She said he liked to tinker and build and was always working on his next project.
Fighter said he’ll be missed.
“We love you (Douglas). We miss you, and we’re glad that you’re home with your mom,” Fighter said.
