A local grandmother is talking only to Action News Jax, just one day after her grandson was released from the hospital after being attacked by a pit bull.

The attack happened the day before Thanksgiving at the Tara Arms apartment complex in Brunswick.

Caller: Oh God, he's going for blood. I'm sorry.

Dispatch: The dog is still on the mom.

Caller: He's still attacking her.

That’s just one of the calls, a neighbor made to 911 on Nov. 23, from the apartment complex.

Police say a pit bull was attacking its owner, Rutha Mae Hunter, while she shielded a 2-year-old boy. Police had to use a Taser on the dog multiple times and an officer even kicked the dog in the face.

Caller: She was guarding the baby. She put herself over the baby, so the baby (inaudible)

Dispatch: So the dog attacked the baby?

Caller: Yes, it did.  It was jealous or something.  I don't know what happened.

“It was like somebody, stabbed  me in my heart,” said Nyrita Carter.

That’s how Carter felt the moment she got the call about the attack.

“My baby got stitches, in his face, my baby got staples in his head,” said Carter.

Two-year old Carmarian Spradley returned home on Tuesday. He has stitches in his face and staples in his head, closing the deep cuts from the dog’s teeth. There’s a bald spot on his head, from where the doctor shaved off some of his hair.

“My baby couldn’t even open his eyes. It’s a miracle, it’s an angel over him,” said Carter.

An angel Carter said was protecting her grandson that morning, especially since she said little Carmarian wasn’t supposed to be inside the apartment in the first place.

“It shouldn’t have happened,” said Carter.

"Somebody got to be accountable. It can be the grandmother, it can be the lady at the townhomes, it can be the dog. How I feel, it should be every one of them,” said Carter.

Carter said her daughter, who is Carmarian’s mother, took him to a friend’s house while she was at work.

Carter said somehow, Carmarian ended up at the home of that friend’s grandmother -- Hunter -- with a pit bull inside. Moments later, police say the dog attacked both the 2-year-old and Hunter. Hunter's 6-month-old great-grandson also ended up with scratches on his face, but a neighbor was able to get him out of harm's way.

“My baby couldn’t even open his eyes. It’s a miracle, it’s an angel over him. She shouldn’t have had no dog inside that apartment. It shouldn’t even happen,” said Carter.

Police have received several complaints about the dog.

Neighbors tell Action News Jax people in the complex were scared of the dog.

The dog is with animal control listed as a vicious dog.
