NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A body found in early June was identified Tuesday by the Fernandina Beach Police Department.

Police said DNA confirmed that the human remains found on June 2 are those of 34-year-old Steven Shaw of Valdosta, Ga.

Shaw attempted to rescue two family members, an 18-year-old and a juvenile, but was overcome by strong currents and was last seen more than 50 feet from shore.

Fernandina Beach lifeguards were able to rescue the two swimmers, but were unable to locate Shaw in the rough surf.

Shaw was presumed dead on May 30, according to police.
