Hundreds of people remember UNF student killed in crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 20-year-old college student who was killed in a car crash last week was laid to rest Saturday.

A University of North Florida basketball game paused for a moment of silence in memory of Laura Erdelyi that evening.

Erdelyi was killed when an SUV crashed into her Honda Civic on Roosevelt and Old Roosevelt boulevards in Riverside Sunday.

Her funeral was at Riverside Presbyterian Church, the day after hundreds of people remembered her at a vigil in Riverside.

Memorial Park was Erdelyi’s favorite spot, according to family and friends.

Friends and family shared stories about Erdelyi’s life for more than an hour.

She was an accomplished dancer, public relations student and much more to the hundreds who gathered to remember her.

Erdelyi’s longtime friends, new acquaintances, teachers, bosses and family stood in reflection in the candlelight.

Her childhood friends Rachel Harris and Tabitha Abbott shared their memories.

“I’m very blessed and honored to say I had her as a friend,” said Harris.

“Laura just loved life in general,” her friend said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said officers don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the rollover crash.
