Northeast Florida school districts have made decisions about makeup days after school was canceled during Hurricane Matthew.
Duval County Public Schools selected three days as Hurricane Matthew makeup days while the St. Johns County School District said it does not need Hurricane Matthew makeup days. DCPS released the following statement about its Hurricane Matthew makeup days:
St. Johns school superintendent Joseph Joyner released the following statement about how no hurricane makeup days are necessary, as the time will be absorbed into the regular school day.
We are fortunate in our district that our calendar is developed to significantly exceed the number of required instructional hours. For this reason the three make-up days needed for Hurricane Matthew will be absorbed by the existing time we have within the school day. There will be no holidays or teacher planning days used to make up this time and I am convinced this is the right thing to do for our school district.
There may be additional adjustments at some schools, but none will require taking an already designated "hurricane make-up day" to use.
Please know that careful thought went into this decision and foremost was the clear understanding of what our students, staff, parents and community had just experienced.
Clay County Schools said there will be no makeup days for school days missed related to Hurricane Matthew.
