NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Witnesses held a 49-year-old man for police after a fatal shooting Sunday in Yulee.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting at 9:30 p.m. at a home in the 76000 block of VanZeeland Lane. Deputies found 54-year-old Catherine VanZeeland on the porch with a gunshot wound to her head.

Several witnesses held the husband, Kurt VanZeeland, who they say shot his wife during a domestic dispute, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"Some witnesses were holding the suspect and actually had been holding him for the officers and deputies," said Undersheriff George Lueders.

According to the police report, those witnesses had heard what sounded like gunshots.

The report also states that while a crime scene technician was preparing to swab VanZeeland's hands for gun powder residue, the suspect said "There is no need for that, I pulled the trigger."

According to the the Sheriff's Office, there were no reports of any previous domestic disputes at the VanZeelands' home.

VanZeeland is charged with second-degree murder and is being held in the Nassau County Detention Facility.

Customers were turned away from Yulee Pawn and Collectibles throughout the day Monday, a pawn shop the VanZeelands owned and operated together.

A sign on the door told customers the shop has been closed temporarily for a family emergency.

"It's a big shock to hear to anything like that happen, I mean we don't want to hear that, we're just small town people," said Cindy Del Rosso who owns the Cut n Go next door.
