CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — UPDATE: 9:40 AM: A reported road rage incident Wednesday morning on Interstate 95 near mile marker 11 in Camden County escalated into a law enforcement pursuit and standoff, resulting in the arrest of a male suspect.
The response involved deputies from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Georgia State Patrol.
The pursuit ended when deputies performed a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect’s vehicle on southbound I-95. Following the standoff, authorities confirmed the suspect was wanted in Virginia on outstanding charges.
The incident began when Glynn County E911 transferred a call to Camden County E911 regarding one vehicle chasing another on I-95 southbound. One caller reported that a male driver was operating his vehicle recklessly and had nearly crashed several times. A second caller reported seeing the driver display a firearm, while a third caller reported hearing gunshots.
After deputies used the PIT maneuver to immobilize the car, the driver refused commands to exit. The male suspect then called 911 from inside his vehicle, claiming that a deputy “had run him over” as he continued to disregard orders from law enforcement.
A crisis negotiator from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office established communication with the suspect while the agency activated its Emergency Response Team. With assistance from the Camden County Emergency Management Agency, Sheriff Kevin Chaney directed the deployment of a Long-Range Acoustic Device to communicate with the driver.
When the driver continued to ignore commands, Georgia State Patrol troopers fired pepper balls into the vehicle. The suspect stepped out of the vehicle but continued to act erratically, leading troopers to deploy a K9 unit at Chaney’s request to arrest the man.
Authorities transported the suspect to a local hospital for physical and mental health evaluations. State police processing the scene later recovered a 9mm firearm where the vehicle came to a stop. Officials closed both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 between mile marker 4 and Exit 14 during the standoff, but all lanes have since reopened to traffic.
8:30 AM: Interstate 95 southbound lanes are closed Wednesday morning following a chase and standoff near mile marker 11. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said the standoff has ended and the suspect is in custody, but the southbound lanes remain closed.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.
