LAKE CITY, Fla. — A Lake City home is destroyed after a fire ripped through it just before 10 p.m. Saturday.
It happened off Southwest Fairfax Glen.
Kayla and Jon-Michael Borzeka said they were watching the show Cops when they noticed the sirens weren’t coming from the TV.
“We looked outside and looked down the block, and we could see the roof was completely engulfed in flames,” Jon-Michael Borzeka said. “I ran down here to make sure there was nobody inside.”
“It [was] actually kind of indescribable,” Kayla Borzeka said. “It was very, very hot, and I wasn’t even on the same side of the street as the fire.”
Kayla Borzeka guessed the flames were at least 15-20 feet tall.
But amidst the chaos, the couple said they could hear barking coming from just behind the fence.
“I never thought I’d run towards a fire, but when someone said there was a dog, I ran towards the fire,” Kayla Borzeka said. “He was in the yard; thankfully, he wasn’t in the home, and that probably saved his life.”
“They managed to get the gate open, and he came running out,” Jon-Michael Borzeka said. “They managed to get a leash on him, but he was scared.”
The Lake City Fire Department says that there were no reported injuries, but the house itself had been overrun by flames. The fire left behind just a few wooden roof rafters and windows that show the entire home at a glance.
The Fire Marshall is still investigating the cause.
Zena Elliott, who lived right next door for 33 years, says it all started after her daughter heard a loud boom.
“She said, ‘Get up and check the house,’” Elliott said. “I opened my front door, and the whole roof was like on fire, and I said, ‘There’s a fire. There’s a fire.’”
Elliott says she rushed to call 911.
When first responders arrived, she was told to evacuate her house immediately.
“They had to spray the trees and the roof and that side so that my house wouldn’t catch a fire,” Elliott said. “I was really very, very scared and feared for my life.”
Elliott says she’s working on setting up a donation system at her local church. She told Action News Jax she would give those details in the coming days.
