Uncovering more than half a century of Jacksonville’s history. Wednesday morning Jacksonville city leaders opened a time capsule that stayed untouched for nearly 60-years behind the cornerstone of the old city hall building downtown.
The cornerstone is dated 1960.
Action News Jax is told construction crews tearing down the building came across the metal box unexpectedly.
“It allows us to see the past as they saw the present, it will help researchers going forward to see Jacksonville as it was in 1960,” Library Director Tim Rogers said.
Mayor Lenny Curry and Councilman Aaron Bowman found old newspapers, city records and other items from the 60’s inside that will now be studied.
The time capsule also contained a letter written by then Mayor Haydon Burns to the city’s future leader that Mayor Curry read Wednesday.
