The man accused of killing a man in a deadly hit-and-run crash in January of 2018, now faces DUI charges.
A hit-and-run victim’s friends and neighbors are outraged after the suspect bonded out of jail – not once, but twice.
“It’s just ridiculous,” said Cindy Claudio, a neighbor.
Police said William Martindale, 38, was arrested last week on a hit-and-run charge. He was allowed to bond out. One week later, he was arrested for DUI, and bonded out again.
“What else does he need to wake up you know to wake up, what else needs to be that wake-up call,” said Claudio.
JSO said Martindale was passed out in the front driver’s seat of the car with the keys still in the ignition along with two open containers in the floor board. In January of last year, police said Ryan McKeller, 24, was found lying underneath a car, which was parked on the side of Ricky Drive. According to the warrant, police were able to track down Martindale’s car a couple of hours later, which had damage to the front. He told police he thought he hit a trash can.
Action News Jax law and safety expert Dale Carson said people may be wondering why Martindale was able to bond out, and the answer is simply the law.
“Why doesn’t the court just keep him in custody, and the answer is everyone is entitled to bond,” said Carson.
Action News Jax did reach out to the State Attorney's Office and was told, "our office has filed a Motion to Revoke Bond for committing a new criminal offense for violating the terms of his bond. That will be heard at his next court date."
Martindale’s next hearing is in two weeks.
