Jacksonville man pleads guilty to murder of UNF student

A man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend in Jacksonville will spend a minimum of 40 years in state prison.

Jarod Matthew Miller pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery, charges that carry a 40-year minimum mandatory sentence.

Miller is accused of shooting and killing former University of North Florida student Nicholas Hare on August 28, 2015.

Miller then shot himself. He was in critical condition at the hospital after the shooting.

Police said he broke into his ex-girlfriends home and shot Hare, 34.

Miller and Hare's girlfriend had been in a relationship for nine years.

They broke up 3½ years before the shooting, officers said.

Hare was finishing an engineering degree at UNF.

His mother said her son was a great student who always made the Dean’s List, and he was looking forward to finishing school to start working.
