Jacksonville Police Officer arrested for battery against handcuffed man in custody

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has announced that an officer has been arrested.

Officer Alexander Grant is being charged with one count of misdemeanor battery after hitting a person already in custody.

He was working off-duty at Poker Room off Monument Road on March 27. A person was outside the business yelling that he would “shoot up” the business. Grant arrested the man for making threats against a business and handcuffed him.

Another off-duty officer saw the incident and reported it to a Sergeant.

After placing the man in a police car, Grant rolled down the window to tell the man of his rights. The man spat in Grant’s face. At this point, JSO says Grant opened the police car door and started to hit the man and ripped the man’s shirt. The man, who is being charged with battery of an LEO for spitting at Grant’s face, was handcuffed the entire time of this incident. The man received small abrasions on his face.

Body Camera footage was captured of the event.

This is the first arrest of a JSO employee in 2021.
