JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man suspected in a murder that happened Wednesday morning is dead after he shot at officers, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

JSO was investigating a shooting around 5:30 a.m. in the 8200 block of Susie Street in which a woman was killed and a man was injured, JSO Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said.

Coarsey said “almost immediately” a person of interest in that shooting was identified.

JSO found that this person, a 53-year-old man, had an active warrant for theft that was issued on Dec. 31.

Coarsey said that JSO’s Community Problem Response Unit began tracking the man to arrest him on the warrant and located him in the 5100 block of Julington Creek Road.

Police blocked the man’s car in from the front and from the back, and the man tried to “defeat that block” but failed, Coarsey said.

The man pointed a gun at officers and fired at least one time.

“There’s physical evidence that the suspect fired that gun, and a firearm was recovered underneath the suspect’s body,” Coarsey said.

Five officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene, Coarsey said.

For two of the officers, it was their second officer-involved shooting and for the other three, it was their first officer-involved shooting.
