JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two people were killed in a shooting Sunday afternoon is Jacksonville's first homicide investigation of the year.
A 22-year-old man, Kareem Hagan, died at the scene, which happened at East 18th and North Main streets. The second victim, 17-year-old Marquis Marquez, was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Family members told Action News Jax that this was a drive-by shooting. They said shots were fired toward a home where a group of people were.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is looking for at least one person in the shooting.
"It's sad, it's sad; somebody lose(s) their life on the first day of the New Year," neighbor Tony Bell said.
Shell casings lay in the middle of East 18th Street. Police say the victims were shot while standing in the street or on the sidewalk. An apparent bullet hole could be seen in one of the homes.
Bell, who lives one block over, said another bullet went through a wall of his house and came within feet from hitting him.
"It went through a wall right where I was sleeping at, real close," Bell said.
Bell said he didn't know if he was the target. He just jumped on the ground and took cover.
I'm not gonna say it's a bad neighborhood, it's a bad city," Bell said.
It's the city's first homicide of the year after a total of 119 last year.
"We're gonna do that whether it happened today or whatever day. We're gonna do everything and put the efforts into solving all the homicides that occurred in Jacksonville and Duval County," JSO Sgt. Chuck Ford said.
The JSO said the man wounded in the shooting is expected to survive, but they hadn't spoken to him because he was in surgery.
Action News Jax asked officers about what we were told about this being a drive-by shooting, but they couldn't confirm that.
