Volunteers from the Jacksonville area are on their way to Louisiana to help families who have lost everything in a devastating flood.
The death toll is at six in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi where waters have risen to historic heights.
Army veteran turned Red Cross volunteer, Melanie Mingia, is one of two local volunteers going to the affected areas.
“Witnessing other's disasters, it's never an easy thing. Definitely looking forward to being able to assist as much as possible,” said Mingia.
At least 17 volunteers from North Florida are either already there or on their way.
Evelyn Penney, whose been deployed seven times with the Red Cross, said they have a large contingent helping flood victims right now.
“There are people on the ground, caseworkers that work with them and help them try to find some place to go so then they can rebuild their lives,” said Penney.
Red Cross volunteers will stay a minimum of two weeks. They will then be relieved by another group of volunteers. According to the Red Cross, they expect to be in the affected areas for at least six weeks.
