One hundred fifty dogs are in need of a home as the Animal Care and Protective Services with the City of Jacksonville is at capacity.
They say because the shelter is so full, dogs that are available for adoption are taking up kennels that are normally used for stray dogs entering the shelter.
Neighbor Cheyenne Meares says she was fostering this dog she named Bubbles, but adopted her Tuesday.
They wanted to make sure she wouldn’t have to come back to the shelter especially because she has three legs.
“She got shot, I think it was two bullets by a 9 mm and they had to amputate her leg,” said Meares.
The shelter originally said there will be free dog adoptions today through March 10, but the city says they’ve extended that for the whole month of March.
