Saydek had Kaashif Griffin, 43, in custody for possession of an open container in a vehicle and resisting an officer early Monday morning, Waters said.
Griffin “was extremely intoxicated” and Saydek was “becoming more frustrated with him,” Waters said.

Saydek struck Griffin “while he was handcuffed on jail property,” Waters said.
“A second officer who witnessed this conduct immediately identified Saydek’s strikes as inappropriate and reported it to his chain of command,” Waters said.

The interaction between Saydek and Griffin was captured on body-worn camera and the footage has been “vetted,” Waters said, and a portion of it was shown during the news conference.
Saydek was hired by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on March 27, 2023. JSO said Saydek was suspended, stripped of his police authority, and the agency said it will seek his termination.
This is the 6th arrest of a JSO employee by JSO this year.
