Jacksonville Turns 200: The city’s earlier consolidations

Many people have heard of the consolidation in 1968, when Jacksonville and Duval County government merged, creating the largest city by area in the continental United States.

But Jacksonville has swallowed up neighbors before.

In 1887, the neighborhoods of LaVilla, Brooklyn, Riverside and Springfield were annexed into the city of Jacksonville.

The separate city of South Jacksonville was founded in 1913. By 1915, it had its own city hall.
