JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The CEO of the Jacksonville Housing Authority was shut down during a board meeting Monday after she floated a proposal that would have given herself and other executive leaders a cut of incoming developer fees.
JHA CEO Cheron Corbett Waller proposed a 12% cut for the CEO from developer fees received by the authority, along with an additional cut for senior leadership.
Waller’s base salary is $300,000.
Under the proposal, if JHA received a $2 million developer fee, $1.6 million would go to the authority and the CEO would receive 12% of that, or $240,000.
Waller said the money would not come from federal funds.
During the meeting, board members questioned Waller about her current salary and how it compares with other public officials.
“Your fee is $300,000 a year, your salary?” one board member asked.
“My base salary, correct,” Waller responded.
After the meeting, Action News Jax asked Waller if $300,000 was not enough.
“So $300,000 based upon my subject matter expert skills from my educational background and professional background too, as well. That’s a base salary,” Waller said. “In addition to other government officials too, as well, public housing authorities throughout the U.S., those salaries can also go up to the upper of $600,000 too, as well.”
Waller also said she believes people should be evaluated based on their skills.
“What’s really enough as a female woman too, as well?” Waller said. “I think it’s most definitely individuals should be evaluated and assessed based upon their skills.”
The draft proposal was voted down Monday.
