A man led officers on a high-speed chase after he punched a 61-year-old and stole his car in Jacksonville Thursday night.
A 61-year-old man told officers that he was watching TV at his home on Avalon Cove Drive when he got hungry and decided to go get a pizza.
He said he walked into his garage and saw his power equipment outside on the driveway.
He said he also heard his car running, but the interior light was off, so he got into the car on the passenger side, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report.
The victim told officers that he chased the suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Khalaf Abdoul Sahtoka Williams, after he took off running down the street.
The victim told officers that Williams stopped running and hit him in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.
Williams then got inside the victim's car and fled as the victim went to a neighbor's house for help, according to the report.
A neighbor told officers that the victim banged on his door and fell to the floor when he opened it. He told his neighbor, "someone tried to steal my car and I've been shot," according to the report.
A JSO officer was in the area and said he saw Williams speed past him near W. Beaver Street and Acorn Street.
Williams led him on a high-speed chase for several miles then crashed into a ditch on West Palm Avenue, according to the report.
He fled on foot, but was taken into custody by a K-9 officer, according to police.
He was charged with battery, burglary, motor vehicle theft and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement.
The victim told police that Williams must have entered his house to get the car keys, which were hanging inside his laundry room.
The victim's injuries were minor, according to the police report.
