Neptune Beach police said that during a traffic stop, Bennett in the vehicle stopped, got out of the vehicle and refused to get back inside. He then became aggressive with the officer, a struggled ensued and Bennett ripped off his shirt, according to police.
The officer then shocked him with a stun gun which, according to officers, didn't have much of an effect on the person. The officer then took out a baton, but did not use it, according to police.
Police say Bennett ran away from the officer and into traffic on Atlantic Boulevard and was hit by a car. Florida Highway Patrol said he was taken to Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Police said the driver of the Toyoa Sienna involved is cooperating with the investigation.

Police said that the original vehicle was pulled over for speeding and that it is too early in the investigation to determine why the man was resisting the officer.
