Police looking for deadly hit-and-run driver

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a man early this morning.

The crash occurred early Saturday morning on the corner of 3rd St. N. and 13th St. N. at approximately 1:43 a.m., according to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.

Police say a black Mercedes struck Daniel Stein as he was crossing the road.

Stein was a line cook at the Flying Iguana that’s a few blocks north of the crash.

The victim died later as he was being transported by life flight to Shands.

Action News spoke to neighbors who heard the helicopter landing to help him just after 1:30 a.m. last night.

“That’s sad to think someone did that and there’s so many lights over there.  Whoever did it had to know they hit something,” said Ilene Kampfe, a neighbor.

Action News spoke with a manager at the Flying Iguana who told us that Stein was a hard worker who will be missed.

The police are asking for help in identifying the vehicle and its owner.  The black Mercedes should have damage as a result of the crash.

If you have any information, contact the Jacksonville Beach Police Department at 904-270-1667.

Daniel Stein's memorial service is set for Tuesday.
