COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 32-year-old Sarasota man was arrested Sunday after leading Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a high-speed chase spanning several roadways at speeds more than 120 mph.
Darrell Horne was taken into custody without incident after deputies coordinated patrol vehicles to box in his motorcycle on U.S. 41.
The incident began around 1 a.m. when a deputy spotted a motorcycle without a license plate exiting one motel parking lot and entering another on U.S. 90, a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office news release states. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop with lights and siren, the motorcycle fled south onto Interstate 75 and quickly outpaced law enforcement.
Over the course of the morning, law enforcement officers encountered the motorcycle at multiple locations. Radar recorded the vehicle traveling at 75 mph on State Road 47 near Clay Electric and reaching 116 mph on Southeast Country Club Road, the news release states.
The motorcycle slowed near County Road 133C, turned west onto the roadway and continued south onto U.S. 41, where deputies successfully executed the maneuver to box it in. Following the arrest, deputies searched Horne’s backpack and found a methamphetamine pipe inside, the news release states.
Horne was booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility on charges including aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving while license suspended or revoked as a habitual offender, dangerous excessive speeding, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of probation.
