A new group of families is getting a memorable childhood experience thanks to an Action News Jax investigation.

Last month, we revealed how schools in poorer neighborhoods were being excluded from school picture day.

Since our investigation first aired, Duval County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti said he would look at changes to the process.

After seeing our story, local photographer Charles Sutton has been working with other local photographers to make sure no family gets left out.

“They grow up so fast. And the only way that life doesn’t overpower those memories is if we have something to trigger them,” said Sutton.

On Friday, he and two other local photographers brought their gear to Martin Luther King Jr. Academy.

The photographers are offering parents digital copies of the photos they take for $1.

It’s one of 26 Duval County schools that didn’t offer the photos this year.

Third-grader Amari Anderson can’t wait for his parents to see his school picture.

“I think they’re going to feel happy,” said Amari.

“School pictures are important because they show who you really are, and they show the world how people look and how people feel about their life,” said 3rd-grader Michaela Rileyball.

Principal Cindy Gentry said it’s a relief.

“I think one of the biggest challenges has been having someone come out for a smaller school. I think that sales may be an issue. And so, just finding a vendor that has been willing to work with us has just been challenging,” said Gentry.

Sutton and his team have another shoot set up at John Love Elementary on Monday.

Sutton said he’s going to work through the summer with the district to make sure no Duval County school has to go without.
