JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A deadly shooting Wednesday night brought the total number of 2019 murder cases in Jacksonville to 76.
Police said a young man was found shot and killed near the intersection of Prospect and West 12th.
Investigators had no suspect information to provide at the time of Wednesday’s briefing.
They say his body was found lying in the street, and believed he’d been shot at that location or somewhere nearby.
According to transparency data provided by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, there were 56 murders as of the same point in time in 2018.

That’s a year-over-year increase of about 35.7%.
Of the 76 open murder cases from 2019, 47 are unsolved, including the shooting death of 16-year-old Adrian Gainer, according to the transparency data.
Gainer became the 27th murder victim in Jacksonville this year, after he was shot and killed at the Hilltop Village Apartments in Moncrief on Feb. 25.
Action News Jax spoke one on one with his grandmother Thursday night.
“I cry every day for him and I wish he was here,” Jordan said. “But he can’t be.”
She’s asking whoever can break the case to come forward.
“They took a special person from us,” She said. “And please, somebody tell. That’s all we need. For one person to reach out, and we can get some justice.”
