Crews were called to the blaze at the three-story complex at about 8:11 a.m. The first responding units encountered heavy flames on the second and third floors and additional fire units were called.
JFRD Chief Percy Golden II said a propane tank on a second-floor balcony ignited. One resident was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was evaluated for injuries “out of an abundance of caution,” Golden said.
Firefighters rescued multiple pets from the fire which impacted 12 units, nine of which were occupied, Golden said. Eleven people have been displaced as a result of the blaze. The Red Cross is assisting with finding shelter for them, Golden said.
JFRD said the propane tank that caught fire was 25 pounds and it’s unknown what it was being used for.
