ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — With the old Davenport Park carousel dismantled and transported to Port Charlotte, there’s a grassroots effort from St. Augustine neighbors to bring a new mid-century carousel to the park in its place.

John Reardon and Katherine Deleo presented their early plans for another carousel to the City Commission on Monday night.

“We have donations coming from everywhere, I mean all over the United States,” said Reardon, a former commissioner in St. Augustine.

Reardon and Deleo say their group has been in contact with the city along the way, and they’re collecting donations online.

They tell Action News Jax they’re also speaking to a local nonprofit about the possibility of operating the carousel. Under the early plans, the funds would go back to the agency, which they say specializes in helping local children. They’re not naming the nonprofit until the plans are solidified.

Deleo says they’ve been in contact with carousel distributors, and discussing prices. They tell Action News Jax the cost could be about $90,000 or more.

“They’re on standby as well,” said Deleo. “They’re more than willing to sell us one as long as we can raise the money and get the city’s approval.”

The City tells us people are encouraged to bring their proposals to the City for review.
