Action News obtained video taken aboard the USS The Sullivans during its training off the coast of Virginia. The video captures the moment when a missile malfunctions, causing a small fire on the flight deck.

The USS The Sullivans malfunctioned seconds after what was supposed to be a missile training exercise. The video shows the missile malfunction and the resulting fire on the deck Saturday around 9 a.m.

A Navy spokesperson said a standard missile two exploded shortly after it was fired. The guided missile destroyer was engulfed in smoke and debris.

Action News asked the Navy what happens next and received this response from Matt Leonard, Navy Sea Public Affairs.

“There were no injuries and only minor damage to the port side of the ship resulting from missile debris. The ship returned to naval station Norfolk for assessment. An investigation into the malfunction has been ordered. It is too early to determine what, if any, effect this will have on the ship's schedule.”

Investigators will now try to piece together what happened on what was supposed to a planned missile exercise for sailors.

Action News asked the Navy how much repairs would cost and who would be responsible for it but we are still waiting to hear back from the spokesperson.
