JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In March of 2020, the then 6-year-old Isis, an American Staffordshire terrier, disappeared from her home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This week, 725 miles away, Isis was found in Fort Lauderdale.

“I never thought I would see her again, so when they called me the other day ... I was at work, and it kind of took my breath away,” said her owner Nicholas Dawson.

“I would like to tell her thank you. Thank you for the fact that you guys had enough presence to call somebody and get her help rather than ignore her,” said Dawson.

The reunion between Isis and Dawson was put in motion earlier this week when a woman waiting to catch a train in Fort Lauderdale noticed Isis and refused to abandon her.

Rather than ignore Isis, that woman brought her to The Broward County Humane Society. On Friday, the Humane Society of Broward County met Dawson here in Jacksonville to give Isis back. Dawson called the reunion a Christmas dream come true.

They met at an Amoco gas station in Jacksonville halfway between South Florida and Dawson’s home in North Carolina. Broward County’s Humane Society animal care supervisor Brandi Youmanz said this reunion never would have happened if Isis hadn’t been microchipped.

“That database is always on file to reference no matter where we go in the country,” said Youmanz.

Dawson first met Isis at an animal shelter back in 2020, where he later adopted her. At the time, Isis only weighed 28 pounds, had missing hair and was in rough shape.

“You made a miracle happen for me and my family even if you don’t know it, and merry Christmas to you,” said Dawson.
